My favorite design tools

I’ve got five “tools” I go to, they are my comfort, my safe place when it comes to designing. I’m sharing, just to share.

Pen and Notebook

I love these. I admit here now freely, I have a real fetish for notebooks. All kinds. I own way too many empty, ready to use notebooks. I cannot help myself from buying ones that appeal to me. I own a ton of Moleskines, one of my biggest addictions. I have these other notebooks, they are made to look like some kind of antique French style book(see above) — they are made in China, so not antique, not French, but I love them all the same. I have also found these other items, my first discovery was in this weird little shop in Dumbo in Brooklyn. They are old books, well old hard cover book covers that have had new innards placed into them, of blank pages. They are amazing and gorgeous.

I love these things because they fulfill a tactile need I have for these things, of something interesting, weighty, and old. When they are filled with hand written notes and drawings they thicken into something wonderful. I did say it’s a fetish of mine.

When I do some design work, the pen and notebook are my go to. I can write down thoughts, ideas, draw things, consider the flow, make doodles, think “out loud” with my pen. It’s part of the “just act” aspect of desigin. When I draw or write I have to take some…
