Ok, so, let’s start with vandalism. In particular the more mindless kind of it, as I’ll admit a good deal of vandalism is in response to things the people, or corporations do to piss off someone or a group of someones. I’m talking to those vandals who partake in mindless vandalism just to vandalize.
Why do they do it? I’m not going to give you a deeply researched ethnographic study, just my humble opinion. I believe a lot of this is motivated by the need to make something to get attention. People want to make things and sometimes, that making is done in a damaging or destructive way, but the maker does so in order to leave their mark.
It’s a very human thing to want to attention, to be noticed, to make a mark. We are all here for a period of time and then we are not here…and it’s something in us to leave a mark in some way that others notice.
Making
I know that a foundational need I have and what brought me into becoming first an Engineer, then a Programmer and finally, a Designer (and a Writer, a Cook…) is the process and outcome of making. I like to make things. I suspect that people who design, et al mentioned above, are largely motivated by this similar need.
