It was a very hot summer day, and unusual for this place, in the heart of the Adirondack mountains. The past few days had been just the opposite, unseasonably cold, it had been grey, rain-filled and unfortunate.
We were on a summer vacation, to a place of nostalgia, at least for my wife and her family. It had been a place they’d come to as children, the entire family, to enjoy the mountains, the lake and the cabins of this campground along Long Lake, NY.
Having all suffered our first few days in rain, cold barely above 50 degrees, we found a day just the opposite. Hot, blue sky, and very dry. The heat was at least 90 and worse because of the dramatic change in just one day.
Because of the raw and cold, the kids spent their time bundled and being rambunctious boys, excited by the presence of their cousin, they had gotten themselves quite muddy. So here, we find ourselves with the dire need to do some laundry.
I’d left early in the day, went into town, just a few, minutes from the campground. At the general store I asked about laundry, they told me to ask over at the grocery store.
The town had only a few places, the general store, a gas station with convenience store, a grocery store and some kind of bar and hotel. The hotel looked like it could fall down at a moments notice.
